Burns hosted Grant Union on Wednesday, Sept. 10, and it was the Prospectors coming out on top 13-2.

After falling behind 4-0, Burns got on the scoreboard with a goal by Jarvis, off an assist by Stampke.

Burns’ second goal came from the Grant Union goalie, who inadvertently knocked the ball into his own net.

In the first half of the game, Burns goalie Charlie White was hurt while covering a ball near the goal. White suffered injuries to a couple of internal organs and ribs, and after being transported to Harney District Hospital by Harney EMS, was flown to a hospital in Portland where he was placed in the intensive care unit. (As of Monday, Sept. 15,  White’s condition was such  that he might be allowed to return home sometime this week.)

The Burns soccer team lost to Umatilla 12-2 in their opening game of the season on Saturday, Sept. 6.

Jarvis scored the Hilanders only goal of the first half, and the Hilanders trailed 4-1 at the break.

At the start of the second half, Jarvis tallied his second goal of the game to cut the lead to 4-2. That goal seemed to spark Umatilla’s offense, as they outscored Burns 8-0 over the remainder of the game.

Along with Jarvis’ two goals, Stampke was credited with an assist for the Hilander offense.

“Umatilla is a very good team,” head coach Jodi McLean said. “That being our first game, it showed us what we have to work on. I’m pretty optimistic about our team, though.”

Martha Mae Norwood Brown died on Sept. 10.

She was born on Aug. 9, 1923, at home in De Queen, Ark., to Ethyl and L.T. “Tull” Norwood.  obit-brown.jpg

Brown attended school in De Queen, Ark., and graduated in 1941. She married Jim A. Brown on Dec. 19, 1941, in Nashville, Ark.

In February 1942, the couple moved to McNary, Ariz., where Brown’s husband worked in the lumber industry. When her husband joined the Navy in 1942, Brown accompanied him to the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. Their first child was born in 1944 at the Naval Hospital.

When her husband was transferred to Hawaii, Brown and her daughter stayed in De Queen, and then McNary, until the war and her husband’s enlistment were over.

The couple leased a service station with Brown’s brother, Ernie, and his wife.  When the lease was over, her husband bought a log truck to make a living.  They bought their first house for $2,500.

With encouragement from her aunt and uncle, Brown and her family  moved to Burns in 1947. Their first home was a garage apartment with dirt floor on the hospital hill.  They lived in other rentals in Burns before they saved enough to buy a home in Hines.

At that time they became Sunday school teachers for the high school class at the First Baptist Church in Burns. Many of those they taught are now serving in the ministry.

Their second child was born in 1951. Shortly thereafter, Brown and her family moved to a new house in Burns. In 1957, they went in partnership with friends Ray and Luella Turley to build the Dairy Queen.  Eventually Brown and her husband bought out the Turleys and operated the business until 1962.

They purchased a duplex in Hines in 1961 and lived there from 1964 until 1966, when they bought a house on North Broadway in Burns. After the Dairy Queen was sold, Brown went to work for life-long friends Dick and Dixie Runnels who owned Al’s Furniture. The store eventually sold and became Wagner’s Furniture. Brown stayed on and worked for Bill Wagner until she retired in 1984.  In 1998, the couple moved to Ontario to be closer to their daughters.

Brown loved to camp and roam the country in their motor home, but her first love was her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. She taught Sunday school for many years at the Hines Conservative Baptist Church (Faith Baptist Church). Brown and her husband had a ministry for the airmen at the Radar Base in Burns for several years and many have become life-long friends.

Brown is survived by her husband, Jim of Ontario; daughters, Judy Schaefer of Ontario and Mary Carter and husband Ron of Keizer; brother, Perry Norwood of Malvern, Ark.; grandchildren, Marley and Tammy Robinson of Carlin, Nev., Ron and Marcie Robinson of Charlotte, N.C., Matt and Amber Schouviller of Portland, and Shawn and Pandi Schouviller of Houston, Texas; and great-grandchildren Jimmy, Tawsha, Lyndsie, David, Emily, Kristen, Chelsey, Taylor and Tyler.

Funeral services were held on Sept. 13 at Nyssa Baptist Fellowship. Interment was held at Hilltop Cemetery in Nyssa. Contributions in Brown’s memory  may be made to the American Cancer Society.
