The real prize for "Yard of the Month" will go the city when they raise your taxes. I did a lot of work on my home last year and got a hefty tax increase due to general maintenance on my home and yard. In these economic times if you have pride of ownership you will be punished. So by all means going green really means going brown. With the rumored threat of utility increases for water many people will be happy to have brown yards while the city waters the parks in the rain.

Yard of the month? Ok, that's fine. But I don't think anyone keeps at their yard for a prize or recognition. I'm almost sure they do it for their own recreation, amusement, pride, or they have the time and can't think of anything better to do. I see a certain property that has surrounded itself with motor homes. Whats up with that? It sure contrasts with other properties nearby that look smart with green lawns and few added adornments.

Cruising the streets a few weeks ago when the weather was nice, I saw an unbelievably messy yard. Its embarrassing to think if the owner there even bothers to bathe. Most of the properties get a passing grade, I don't really expect much. The city itself could improve with the overhead transmission lines. How about that hose that extends from CenturyTel all the way down Railroad ave., what an eyesore. And then on west Monroe, the lines splice off in mid air appearing very shoddy. I don't know how to improve that scene other than to spend more money and bury the lines.

I suspect the yard where I reside will go to hell this year. I got chewed out by the landlord last year for watering the lawn. This year, she's installing low-flow shower heads in all the units so, don't look for much green around here. Water is probably getting to be a costly commodity, anyone who wins the prize of the month should only be ashamed of themselves.
