In an effort to make the community more attractive, the City of Burns has begun the first phase of the nuisance and ordinance campaign.

Burns Fire Chief Bill Guindon stated that approximately 20 properties have been identified as having nuisance problems, and have been sent a 30-day courtesy letter. “Last year when we sent out letters, we had about 80 percent compliance,” Guindon said.

The courtesy letter asks residents to remove the visible trash, junk or vehicles from their property. As the weather warms up, the city will conduct an assessment of brush and other debris.

Cleaning up the properties is not just for appearance, there are safety issues as well, Guindon said. He said that children could get hurt playing around old appliances, vehicles or lumber piles, and if the brush gets too high, it becomes a fire hazard.

Residents are asked to comply voluntarily, but if they don’t, the city has created a matrix to follow, which may include citations and ultimately, abatements. “Our goal isn’t to cite people, it’s to educate them and to improve the community,” Guindon said.

The city has a list of tips to help identify nuisances available at city hall.

“We’ll work with people to help them get the property cleaned up,” Guindon said. “We want residents to feel proud of the community, and make it attractive to people coming through.”
