Marjorie Estella Hayes Gunkel died on Aug. 29.
She was born on Jan. 2, 1932, in Burns to Othniel Elton Hayes and Zelma Izora March Hayes.
Gunkel attended grade school at Lawen, riding horseback to school each day with her brothers. They would bring a feed bag with them for the horses to feed while school was in session. In 1945, her brothers, Scott and Elton, drowned in a neighboring pond.
Following their death, her parents sold everything and moved to Grants Pass. The family then moved to Eagle Point, where Gunkel attended high school, graduating in 1950.
On Dec. 24, 1951, she married Alfred Gunkel in Lakeview.
Gunkel held many jobs, including mowing lawns, cleaning houses, selling Christmas cards and as a kitchen aide. Her retirement years were spent helping other people.
Gunkel is survived by her children, Claudia Hayes of Shady Cove, Scott Gunkel and wife Nina of Lawen, Martin Gunkel of Crane, Daniel Gunkel and wife Rosie of Eagle Point, Harvey Gunkel and wife Nida of Crane, Lorella Monroe and husband Jim and Luccettie McDermond and husband Don of Crane.
She is also survived by her sister, Izora Osborn of Trail; nephew, Jim Bosch of Hines; nieces, Patty Bosch of Milton-Freewater and Laveta Osborne of Medford, and 21 grandchildren.
Gunkel was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers and her daughter, Carmen.
