Betty Cheek

Betty Zane Cheek died on Nov. 28 at Harney District Hospital of natural causes.

She was born on Dec. 28, 1928, in Burns to Alvon and Emma Baker, the youngest of six children, all girls.

She married Robert McManus on July 15, 1945. To this union two children were born, Robert Wesley in 1946, and Linda in 1949. Her husband passed away in 1951.

On Aug. 25, 1951, Cheek married John Hoffman, Jr. She had two more children, Rozann in 1953 and John in 1962.

She and her husband divorced in 1974.

Cheek worked for Rudy’s Shoe Store, and then Mosley’s Shoe Store when it changed hands, for 13 years. She lived her entire life in Burns.

In 1975, she married Orville Cheek, Sr. and became the mother of his children, Troy, Pete, Clara, Orville, Jr. and Bill. She enjoyed going to Arizona and Nevada for the winters with her husband until his death in 1998.

Cheek enjoyed going to Erickson’s market daily to have coffee with her daughter, Linda, other family members and friends. She loved going to yard sales and also attended the Harney County Senior Center several times a week to socialize with her friends, play cards and Bingo.

She also enjoyed playing SKIP-BO with her kids, grandkids and great-grandkids. She came up with some colorful names for them if they were winning.

Cheek will be remembered as a wonderful and caring daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother and friend.

Cheek is survived by her children, Linda Gideon and husband Jack of Hines, Rozann Hoffman and Gale Prince of Burns and John Hoffman of Burns; and step-children, Troy Cheek and wife Sandy of Christmas Valley, Clara Thielke and husband Ray of Canyon City, Orville Cheek, Jr. and wife Arvetta of Boise, Idaho, and Bill Cheek and wife Lori of Hines; grandchildren, Missy Collette and husband Matt of Portland, Bob Gideon and Christina Wilson of Wassilla, Alaska, Darcy Stewart and husband Jeff of Brush Prairie, Wash., Christy Fobi of Portland, Joe Robertson and wife Lindsey of rural Harney County, Kyeliegh Reasoner of Baker City, Cory Reasoner of Bend, Shelby Weiller and Jonathon Weiller of Kalispell, Mont., Mary Jo Evers and husband Jeremy of Hines, and Stephanie Lardy and husband Chris of Hines.

She is also survived by great-grandchildren, Sage, Haley, Dana, Brodie, Annie, Ashlee, Brooke, Lexy, Olivia, Isaac, Mellissa, Evan, Aidan, Carter and Trask; sisters, Roselle Connall of Hines, Arlene Shaw of Edmonds, Wash., and Katherine Barstad and husband Marvin of La Pine; and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; infant son, Robert Wesley; granddaughter, Becky Gideon Weiller; sisters, Smokey Gunderson and Twyla Turner; brother-in-laws, Sam Gunderson and Allen Turner; and nieces, Barb Whitmore and Louise Prince.

Contributions in Cheek’s memory may be made to the Harney County Senior Center or the Harney County Home Health Hospice. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
