Robert “Bubba” Wright died on Nov. 7, at Harney District Hospital, after a three and one-half year battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
He was born on Jan. 24, 1959, to Marvin and Florence Wright in Orange, Calif.
When he was two years old, Wright’s family moved to Oregon, where they moved around for his father’s work as a timber faller. They settled in Prospect around 1969, and Wright went to Prospect Elementary School and Prospect High School. He excelled in football and baseball, and played basketball only to stay in shape between sports.
After high school, Wright worked seasonally for the U.S. Forest Service fighting fire for two years. In the winter of 1979, he went to work for the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) in Prospect, plowing snow. He transferred to the Roseburg extra gang around 1985. In 1990, Wright was promoted to Section Foreman Boswell Springs in Drain. He then became the Transportation Maintenance Manager in Burns, working from Oct. 1994, through March 2004, where he ended his 23-year career with ODOT. He worked for the Harney County Road Department as the office manager from 2004 to 2008.
Wright met Brenda Artmire in high school, when he worked for her grandpa and father at their gas station in Prospect. They were married in December, 1985, and had two children — Krissandra in 1989 and Raymond in 1993. Wright and his family made their home in Sutherlin from 1989 to 1995, before moving to Burns, where he had lived for the past 17 years.
In 1989, Wright found his second love, flying. He obtained his private pilot’s license in July 1989, and went on to get his instrument and commercial endorsements. He flew anytime he could get a chance, and bought the first of his three airplanes when he moved to Burns.
Wright was involved with the Burns Lions Club, the Pioneer Presbyterian Church and the NRA as an endowment member. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, auto restoration, motorcycle riding and woodworking.
Wright is survived by his mother, Florence Wright; wife of 25 years, Brenda; children, Krissandra and Raymond; aunt, Nadine Haukos and husband Al; uncle, Walter Ridge and wife Jenny; many cousins; and his wife’s mother, father and sister.
He was preceded in death by his father, Marvin Wright.
A celebration of life service for Wright will be held Nov. 19, at the Harney County Fairgrounds Memorial Building at 2 p.m. Contributions in his memory made be made to the ALS Association or the Pioneer Presbyterian Church, in care of LaFollette’s Chapel, P.O.
