Burns faces G.U. on Friday in key EOL twinbill

The Burns baseball team improved to 4-0 in Eastern Oregon League (EOL) play by sweeping Riverside 8-3 and 10-1 on Friday, April 20, at Corbett Memorial Field.

Austin Piper pitched a complete game and got the win in the opener, giving up just one earned run on eight hits with one strikeout and no walks.

Burns took a 1-0 lead in the first inning as Tyler Sims doubled home Nolan Stampke.

Burns increased their lead to 4-0 in the fourth inning on an RBI double by Brennan Bailey and Jeff Garner’s two-run single.

The Hilanders tacked on two more runs in the sixth when Stampke doubled home Casey Heinz and then scored on a single by Tyler Cooper.

In the top of the seventh with Burns up 8-1, the Pirates made things interesting when the first three batters scored two runs on an error and two doubles.

The rally ended there however, as Piper put the next three batters down in order.

Stampke was 4-for-4 with two RBIs and Garner 2-for-3 with two RBIs.

The Hilanders took control of the second game with a seven-run fourth inning. Leading 3-1, the Hilanders put their first two batters on with walks and then loaded the bases on a single by Heinz. Austin Feist followed with an RBI single and Stampke doubled in two more runs. Sims then singled to bring in Feist and Stampke. A two-out single by Garner drove in the final two runs for Burns.

The win went to Stampke as he gave up just one unearned run on four hits over seven innings while striking out eight and walking two.

Heinz, Feist, Stampke and Garner each collected two hits for Burns.

In other EOL action on Friday, Vale and Grant Union split their doubleheader. Vale won the opener 9-6 and Grant Union took the second game 3-2.

On Saturday, April 21, Nyssa and Umatilla split their doubleheader. Nyssa won the opener 11-9 and Umatilla pounded the Bulldogs 16-4 in the second game.

Burns continues EOL play this Friday when they travel to John Day to take on Grant Union. The doubleheader starts at 1 p.m.

The Sisters Outlaws came up with an 8-5 win over the Burns Hilanders in non-conference baseball action on Wednesday, April 18.

After falling behind 4-0 after two innings, the Hilanders began a comeback in the third. After Heinz and Feist started the frame with back-to-back singles, Stampke followed with a homer over the right field fence to cut the deficit to one.

Burns took the lead in the top of the fourth as Austin Martin scored on an error and Stampke singled in Piper.

Burns couldn’t hold the lead however, as the Outlaws put three runs on the board in the fifth and added an insurance run in the sixth.

Stampke got the start and gave up three runs on four hits with a walk and one strikeout in one inning of work. Piper pitched the next two innings and gave up an unearned run on one hit. Sims came on in relief and took the loss as he gave up three runs, two earned on four hits with three walks and one strikeout. Martin finished up on the mound and gave up one run on one hit and a walk.

Stampke was 2-for-3 with four RBIs and Martin finished 3-for-3 with a run scored.

The Burns JV baseball team split their doubleheader with Vale on Tuesday, April 17.

The Vikings won the opener 12-2 in five innings, and the Hilanders bounced back to win the second game 12-10.
