Hilanders now prepare for 3A playoffs that start May 23

The Burns baseball team finished up Eastern Oregon League (EOL) play with a sweep of the Nyssa Bulldogs, giving them a perfect 10-0 record in league play this season.

The Hilanders won the first game 12-1 in five innings and then shut out the Bulldogs in the second game 9-0.

Burns took a 4-0 lead in the first inning of the opener on a two-run double by Nolan Stampke, followed by Tyler Cooper’s two-run homer over the right field fence.

The Hilanders made it 7-0 in the second inning, with two runs scored on a double by Casey Heinz and a balk bringing in the third run of the frame.

After Nyssa scored a run in the top of the third, Burns answered back with five runs in their half of the inning. Heinz picked up an RBI with a bases-loaded walk, and Austin Feist then put the icing on the cake with a grand slam.

Austin Piper gave up just one more hit over the next two innings to shut Nyssa down and pick up the win.

In his five innings of work, Piper gave up just the one run on five hits with five strikeouts and no walks.

Stampke had two of the Hilanders’ five hits.

Heinz gave Burns a 1-0 lead in the first inning of the second game as he drew a lead-off walk, stole second and scored on a ground out.

In the third, Feist gave Burns a two-run lead with an RBI-single and Cooper made it 5-0 with a bases-loaded triple.

Burns went up 8-0 in the fourth inning on a three-run home run by Stampke.

A bases-loaded walk by Heinz in the fifth capped off the Hilanders’ scoring.

Stampke pitched the complete-game shut out, and gave up six hits with eight strikeouts and four walks.

Feist collected two of Burns’ seven hits.

The Hilanders have secured a spot in the 3A state playoffs and were ranked sixth in the OSAA 3A rankings as of May 14.
The 3A playoffs get under way Wednesday, May 23, with the top eight ranked teams getting home games. Times and match-ups have yet to be determined.

The Burns JV baseball team picked up two road wins at Nyssa on Thursday, May 10.

The Hilanders rapped out 12 hits and took advantage of nine Bulldog errors to win the opener 22-7 and then finished the sweep with an 8-4 victory.

In the first game, Burns’ offense got going early as they scored eight runs in the first three innings, added three in the fifth and then ended the game with an 11-run sixth.

Andy Sutcliffe had three hits, including two doubles, and an RBI for Burns, Garrett Blackburn collected two hits and two RBIs, Cody Rebeiro drove in four runs and Alex Theall had three RBIs.

Logan Bailey got the win, giving up one run on one hit with six strikeouts and three walks over four innings. Jack Van Tassel pitched the last two innings and surrendered six runs, two earned, on three hits with one strikeout and three walks.

Burns trailed 1-0 after three innings in the second game, but went ahead to stay with three runs in the fourth. They then scored five runs over the next three innings to get the victory.

Sutcliffe pitched a complete game and gave up two earned runs on seven hits with eight strikeouts and four walks.

Van Tassel had three of Burns’ eight hits in the game as well as an RBI and a run scored.
