After some good hitting in the first two games of the Class 3A baseball state playoffs, the Hilanders’ bats fell almost silent in the semifinals.

Jeff Hendrix pitched a two-hit shutout as Santiam Christian (26-3) downed Burns 6-0 on Tuesday, May 29, at Corbett Memorial Field.

It was a scoreless pitchers’ duel between Hendrix and the Hilanders’ Nolan Stampke until the fourth when the Eagles scored a run on a lead-off triple and an RBI single.

Burns (18-10) had a scoring chance in the fifth when lead-off hitter Jeff Garner was hit by a pitch and Tyler Sims singled him to second. Following a strikeout, both runners advanced on a groundout, and Hendrix then got out of the inning with a flyout to center field.

Santiam Christian upped their lead to 5-0 in the sixth with a walk, RBI-triple, an error and a two-run homer.

The Hilanders got two runners on with one out in their half of the sixth, but were unable to get anyone home.

The Eagles tallied their final run of the game on a throwing error and then set the Hilanders down in order in their final at-bat to advance to the championship game on Friday, June 1.

Stampke pitched well, giving up five earned runs on eight hits with five strikeouts and three walks over seven innings.

Hendrix struck out nine and walked two in his seven innings of work. He also had three of the Eagles eight hits and Alex Hovelsrud collected two hits.

Other than Sims’ single, the only other hit for Burns was Austin Feist’s first-inning double.
