Six members of the Harney County High School Rodeo Team have earned spots in the National High School Finals Rodeo to be held July 15-21 in Rock Springs, Wyo.
In order to qualify for the nationals, competitors have to finish in the top four of their event in the year-long, aggregate scoring that was capped off at the Oregon State High School Finals in Prineville June 13-16.
Tyler Opie qualified for nationals by finishing first in steer wrestling, while Ryan Opie and his partner, TJ McCauley, won the team roping event.
Also moving on to nationals are Kenny Haworth, fourth in bareback riding; Nic Nyman, third in tie-down roping; Zalin Arritola, second in saddle bronc; and Cash Casey, fourth in saddle bronc.
Competitors that finished in numbers five through 15 after the state finals qualify for the Silver State Invitational Rodeo July 1-7 in Winnemucca, Nev.
The Harney County team will have 10 members in the arena at the Silver State Rodeo including saddle bronc riders Riley Joyce, Cody Lamb, Wyatt Clark and Michael Casey; R. Opie, tie-down roping; N. Nyman and Arritola, steer wrestling; Paige Landon, goat-tying; Quinton Nyman (with Pake Sorey) and T. Opie (with AJ McCauley), team roping.
Also competing for Harney County in both breakaway roping and team roping was Raime O’Sullivan.
