Mary Lurie Welcome Whiting died, surrounded by family and friends, at the University of Washington Medical Center on Jan. 1, following a brief and sudden illness.
She was born Aug. 1, 1946, in Burns to Wallace and Dera Welcome, who preceded her in death.
She attended school in Burns, graduating in 1964. She attended Seattle University from 1964-68, graduating magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in English. She worked 44 years for the Cataloging & Metadata Services of the University of Washington Libraries as an original cataloger responsible for books in German, French, special collections and videos.
She enjoyed music, traveling, films, reading and living life to the fullest with her family and multitude of friends.
She is survived by her younger sisters, Louanne (Jean) Fugal of Scio and Weslie Welcome of Burns; nephews, Chad (Marie) Clevenger and children Hannah and Carter of Salem and Ryan (Yue) Hayes and daughter Charlotte of Seattle; nieces, Nicole (Leo) Clevenger and Melissa (Zak) Dablow and children Dylan and Avery of Salem; cousins, Frani (Bart) Jenkins of Steamboat Springs, Colo., Janie (Tom) Ritley of Hansville, Wash., Colleen (John) Atkinson of Baker City and Eleanor Skelton of Boise, Idaho; and a litany of friends.
A celebration of her life will be held this spring at a gathering of family and friends at the Oregon coast.
