In response to the quotes from Jack Smith....Trees aren't cattle. It takes several decades at minimum to get big trees. We could cut down all the big trees now and be in the same place in a few years. There are also other reasons to try to move towards a forest with more widely spaced big trees than many small ones aside from the sustainability of timber harvest. Preventing catastrophic fires is probably chief among them, but preserving some semblence of a natural forest and wildlife habitat is another. The forest is also a resource for outdoor tourism (winter sports, hunting, hiking, camping), or it should be.

There is a difference between managing a privately owned cattle herd and a publicly owned forest. Forests should be managed to maximize benefits across constituencies rather benefits for one constituent.
