Kody Nelson rushed for 103 yards and scored four touchdowns to lead Grant Union to a 42-16 win over Burns in the season opener for both teams Friday, Aug. 30.
The Prospectors started 11 seniors, and the experience paid off early, as they scored on their first four possessions.
Nelson scored from one yard out, and added the two-point conversion, to finish off the first drive and put Grant Union up 8-0.
Following a Burns punt, the Prospectors made it 14-0 on a 10-yard touchdown run by Lane Williams.
Burns put together a good drive on their next possession, but ended up going out on downs at the Grant Union 26.
After picking up one first down on the ground, Nelson hauled in a pass from Dalton Reimers, and outraced the defenders 62 yards for the score.
Nelson’s third score of the first half, a 26-yard run, put the Prospectors up 28-0 at halftime.
Burns got on the scoreboard with 4:49 left in the third quarter when Seth Nonnenmacher bulled his way into the end zone from 10 yards out.
The Hilanders got the ball back on Trey Recanzone’s interception, but ended up punting the ball back to the Prospectors.
Nelson then capped off a 64-yard scoring drive with a 3-yard run, putting Grant Union up 34-7 with 11:12 left in the game.
The Hilanders answered back with a scoring drive of their own, with Austin Feist covering the final 13 yards, to cut the lead to 34-14.
A penalty on the ensuing kickoff put Grant Union back to their own 2, and Nonnenmacher put two more points on the board for Burns when he tackled Nelson in the end zone for a safety.
Reimers scored the final touchdown of the game on a 1-yard run in the closing minutes, making it 42-16.
Feist rushed for 133 yards on 22 carries, and Nonnenmacher picked up 112 yards on 20 attempts.
