Vale takes home first place trophy

The Vale Vikings defeated Nyssa in the championship match of the Burns Invitational volleyball tournament Saturday, Sept. 7.

The host Hilanders were knocked out in the semifinals by Nyssa, losing in three games, 20-25, 25-22, 9-15.

Burns began the day strong, beating Ontario in the first round of pool play 25-22, 25-7.

The Hilanders then defeated Columbia (Nampa, Idaho) 25-22, 25-16 in the second round.

In their third pool play match, Burns split with Union 22-25, 25-22.

Burns won their first match in bracket play, defeating Lakeview 25-11, 11-25, 15-12.

They then lost to Nyssa, ending their run in the tournament.

For the Hilanders, Taylor Crafts finished with 20 kills; Catherine Clemens 28 kills, 12 aces; Abby Nonnenmacher nine kills, three blocks; Madison Carson six kills, eight blocks; Megan Lee six kills; Carli Feist 10 kills, eight aces, 17 digs; Mariah Ribeiro seven aces, 45 assists, 26 digs; Madison Woodworth six aces, nine digs; Kylee Fisher 17 digs; Hailey Sanders 14 digs.

The Hilanders hosted La Pine Tuesday, Sept. 10, in non-conference action. Results of the match were not available by press time.

Burns plays at Crook County Thursday, Sept. 12, and then begins Eastern Oregon League play Saturday, Sept. 14, hosting Riverside. The JV match starts at 1 p.m., followed by varsity.

Burns downed Lakeview in four games, 27-25, 25-10, 23-25, 25-21, Tuesday, Sept. 3, at Lakeview.

Clemens had 15 kills, 17 digs; Crafts eight kills; Carson seven kills; Woodworth 100 percent serving; Ribeiro 14 assists; Feist 11 assists, six aces; Fisher 26 digs.
