Born Oct. 31, 1938, in Idaho Falls, Idaho, Ron was the youngest of 12 children. He grew up hunting, fishing and enjoying the outdoors with his father and brothers. He attended elementary school in Lincoln, Idaho, and junior high and high school in Ammon, Idaho.
Ron attended Idaho State in Pocatello, Idaho, where he met Louise Crane. The two married Aug. 20, 1962, in the Idaho Falls Temple, and celebrated 50 years together with their children and grandchildren in August 2012.
Ron entered the army, and they moved to Georgia and Washington. Following his military service, he pursued graduate education in mathematics at Penn State. In 1972, the family moved to Burns, where he worked for the Harney County School District, and where they owned and operated a family motel business, which provided their children with real-world learning experiences. His adventurous spirit and desire to teach his children through experience led the family on vacations to new destinations across the United States, usually on a shoestring budget. As a result of their parents’ tutelage and sacrifice, all six of their children received degrees from Brigham Young University. Ron was also an avid sportsman and scouter who frequently shared his love of hunting, fishing and the outdoors with his children and others. He acted as an informal guide to friends and family on frequent summer fishing trips to Southeast Alaska.
A member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS), Ron constantly served others and spent his entire life diligently engaged in church service, where he blessed the lives of many people. As a young man, he served in the Northern California Mission. In the latter part of his life, he served two 18-month missions with his wife, being assigned to Sialkot, Pakistan; Johor Bahru, Malaysia; Chisinau, Moldova; and Bucharest, Romania.
He is survived by his children, Ronald E. (Michelle), Garth (CayLynne), Mark (Tifiny), Dawn (Paul Jenson), Karen (Chris Thompson), Jon (Becky); brothers, Lynn, F. David, Wesley, and Lee; and 27 grandchildren.
Ron was preceded in death by his wife, Louise; his parents, Albert C. Reed and Annie Melvina Judy; his sisters, Lola Barrett, Evelyn Smith, Vonnie Mortenson and Donna Benson; his brothers, Arnold Reed, Verl Reed and Glen Reed; infant grandsons, William Robin Reed and Edward Joseph Jenson.
A funeral service was held Saturday, Sept. 14, at the Bennington LDS Chapel.
