Tyler Opie rushed for 199 yards and four touchdowns on 10 carries to lead Crane to a 68-14 homecoming win over Arlington on Friday, Oct. 11, at Valentine Field.

With the victory, the Mustangs improved to 5-1 on the season, while the Honkers dropped to 1-5.

Crane opened up a 28-0 first quarter lead, and led 52-6 at the half, resulting a running clock for the remainder of the game.

After forcing the Honkers to punt on the game’s opening possession, Crane began their first series at the Honkers’ 48. The first two plays resulted in lost yardage, and on third-and-21, Travis Landon threw a short pass to Opie, who turned it into a 56-yard gain.

Austin Roath finished off the drive with a 3-yard run to put Crane up 6-0.

The Honkers picked up two first downs on their drive before turning the ball over on downs at the Mustangs’ 31.

Landon handed off to Opie on first down, and he rambled  the length of the field to give Crane a 12-0 advantage.

The Honkers’ Kyle Wetherell returned the ensuing kickoff back to the Crane 20, but the Crane defense didn’t yield a yard, and the Mustangs took over on downs.

Landon’s 41-yard run on first down put the Mustangs into Honker territory, and on fourth-and-two, Opie broke loose again, scoring from 31 yards out. Justin Baldwin added the two-point conversion, and Crane led 20-0.

Crane recovered a fumble on the first play of the Honkers next drive, and took over at the Honker 49.

Opie’s 27-yard scoring run finished off a five-play drive, and Roath  added the two-point conversion to put Crane up 28-0 as time ran out in the first quarter.

Crane kicked off to start the second quarter, and Arlington’s Michael Hauner got the Honkers on the scoreboard with a 79-yard return for the touchdown.

The Mustangs recovered the onside kick attempt at the Arlington 46, and it took just two plays for Crane to find the end zone once again. Opie rushed for 32 yards on the first play, then scored his fourth TD of the day from 14 yards out.

Landon threw to Matt Witzel for the two-point conversion, and Crane was up 36-6 with 11:26 to play in the first half.

After Arlington turned the ball over on downs at their own 45 on their next series, Opie ripped off a 25-yard run, followed by a 30-yard scamper by Roath for the score.

Roath also ran in the two-point conversion to give Crane a 44-6 lead.

The Honkers moved the ball on their next drive, reaching a first-and-10 at the Crane 10. Two rushing plays got the ball to the one, but the Crane defense then stopped Hauner for a 4-yard loss, and the Honkers faced fourth-and-goal from the 5-yard line.

Jonah Davis’ fourth-down pass was batted into the air, and fell into the hands of Witzel, who sped 95 yards in the opposite direction for the score.

Opie ran in the conversion, and Crane led 52-6 going into the halftime break.

Crane’s two touchdowns in the second half came on passes from Jack Bentz. He first hit Corbin Hammond for a 24-yard score, then hooked up with Witzel on a 41-yard reception with less than eight minutes to go in the game.

The Honkers’ final tally came on a 51-yard pass from Davis to Zackary Blinn.

Crane rolled up 446 yards of total offense, including 321 rushing yards.
