Kaya Dobson traveled with her coach, Evan Franulovich, to the Oregon State Taekwondo Championships in Portland last weekend to compete for a spot on the state taekwondo team that will travel to San Jose, Calif., in July for the nation’s largest, and most prestigious, taekwondo tournament. They joined more than 200 other martial artists from Oregon, Washington and California in the one-day event.
Dobson competed in both forms and board-breaking. Although Dobson did not medal in forms, she did beat out three other competitors to win the gold medal in board-breaking.
“Kaya is a great competitor. Her focus was outstanding, and she performed very well. It was a great learning experience,” Franulovich said.
Dobson trains locally at Martial Arts America in Burns, and is getting close to testing for her black belt.
