Horizon Christian scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to pull out a 7-6 win over Burns in the first round of the OSAA Class 3A state baseball playoffs on Wednesday, May 28.

The Hilanders jumped on the No. 3-ranked Hawks early, scoring four runs in the second inning.

Each team scored a run in the fourth, and Horizon Christian cut the lead to 5-3 with a pair of runs in the fifth.

The Hawks pushed another run across in the sixth, making it a one-run ball game.

Burns went back up by two, scoring a run in the top of the seventh.

In their final at-bat, the Hawks loaded the bases, scored a run when the next batter was hit by a pitch, and then ended the game with a two-run double.

“This was a very difficult loss. The kids played their hearts out, which makes it that much tougher when you lose,” Burns coach Kevin Feist said.

“We had the lead the entire game until they hit a two-run walk-off double to win the game in the bottom of the seventh inning.

“We were so close to winning the game and moving on to the next round of the playoffs, however, you have to give credit to Horizon Christian for stepping up and getting the job done when they had to.

“Not a lot of people probably expected us to beat the No. 3-ranked team in the state, but the guys believed they could and they almost pulled off a big upset.”

Austin Feist had two hits and an RBI for Burns, and Ty Reid collected two hits, including a double, and scored twice. Ty Hueckman doubled and drove in a run, and Garrett Blackburn had one hit and an RBI.

Logan Bailey got the start for Burns and surrendered three earned runs on six hits while striking out three and walking three over 5 1/3 innings.

Hueckman came on in relief and took the loss by giving up three runs on four hits with one strike out.

The Hilanders finished the season with a 15-12 overall record.

“After the sting of a tough loss like this wears off a little, you have to look at the big picture and be proud of the accomplishments this season,” Feist said. “We were a very young team, however, we managed to place second in the Eastern Oregon league, and secure an eighth straight appearance in the 3A state playoffs for the Burns Hilanders baseball program. These guys have a lot to be proud of.”
