Burns Community Blood Drive will be held Sept. 27-29, at the Burns Church of Latter-day Saints.

The Harney County Health Department will be available at the Harney County Senior Center, 17 South Alder, to check blood pressure the fourth Monday of each month from 1-3 p.m. There is no charge for the clinic and results can be forwarded to a physician or nurse practitioner at your request.

Harney County Library Advisory Board meets the last Monday of each month (except for those dates that fall on national holidays) in the library, 80 West D St., at 6 p.m. The public is welcome to attend. Use the back door to the left. For more information, call 541-573-7339.

Order of Eastern Star meets the second and fourth Monday of each month at the Burns Masonic Hall, 1210 West Taylor, at 7:30 p.m.

Harney County Library will present “The High Lava Plains Geoscience Project: What We Learned,” on Sept. 16 at 6:30 p.m. Five years ago, a team of scientists installed seismometers across a broad area of the Northwest, including Harney County. What did they discover about volcanic activity here? Find out what the high lava plains are and what this study means for Harney County.

Burns Butte Sportsman’s Club will sponsor a 100 bird dual shoot, “Pre-Hunting Jamboree,” on Sept. 18, at the Radar Base. The shoot will include two events — 50 sporting clays and 50 trap birds — with clays beginning at 9:30 a.m. All shooters are welcome. Trophies for high-overall in each event will be awarded. Separate awards will be presented for youth and women if enough participate. Lunch will be available.

An AARP Driver Safety Program course will be held on Sept. 18, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Harney County Health Department, 420 N. Fairview. The program is a classroom refresher course, especially designed for drivers 50 and over, but is open to drivers of any age. Completion of the entire program is necessary to receive the Driver Safety certificate. Drivers 55 and older who present their certificate to their auto insurance, may receive a discount on insurance. To maintain the discount, people up to age 69 must take the course every three years and people age 70 and over need to take the course every two years.
